「用紙に書き込む」いうことを表す際、“fill out”と“fill in”のどちらを使いますか？

実際にはこれ、どちらも使われている表現ということもあって、答えるのが難しい質問なんです。

以下、一般的なルールです。

1.fill inは書式の一部の欄に情報を書き込むことを表します。
2.fill outは書式全体を完成させることを表します。

例文：

1. You only need to fill in your name and address on this form.
あなたの名前とご住所をこの書式に記入すれば結構です。

2. Please fill out this questionnaire and return it to us by tomorrow.
このアンケートを記入して、私たちに明日までにお戻しください。

こちらのルールは厳しいです。

“fill”を使った別の表現を見てみましょう。

1. fill the gap:隙間をふさぐ、穴を埋める

We need to hire someone to fill the gap while Keiko is on maternity leave.
ケイコが産休の間の穴埋めに誰かを雇わなければいけない。

2. fill (someone) in:～を教える

I missed the meeting yesterday so can you fill me in on what happened?
昨日のミーティングに出られなかったので、何があったか教えてもらってもいい？

3. fill someone’s

shoes:～の後を引き継ぐ
I heard that John is retiring next year. It is going to be hard to fill his shoes because he has been with the company since it started.
